Review: Slushy Magic

Description: A slushy maker
Main Pitch: "Transform any drink into a frosty, cool slushy ... [with] no ice, no blender, no mess."
Main Offer: $19.99 for one with spoon straw and drink guide
Bonus: 2nd complete set
Marketer: Ontel
Producer: Hutton-Miller
Website: www.SlushyMagic.com
Prediction: Likely to succeed

I usually refrain from giving predictions for items that are targeted toward kids because I don't have a good understanding of the criteria for such products. For instance, I know one of the key criteria for "adult" DRTV products -- solving a problem -- doesn't apply. I also know "wow factor" is much more important, possibly the No. 1 criterion. You have to get the kids to bug mom. Beyond that, I lack the experience necessary to say whether a kids' item could be a DRTV hit or not.

So why the prediction here? One reason alone: When I watched the commercial, my "inner child" wanted the product. My rational brain also told me that slushies are popular, and there is no cheap and easy way to make them at home. True, you can just go down to the local 7-11 and buy a slushy, but this product lets you make any flavor you want. You can make healthy ones, too. Come on mom, please!

On a side note, the $12.99 price point [this originally tested with] is noted as a first. Telebrands has been testing $10.99, something I also noted and am tracking with interest. I want to see if another bit of common DRTV knowledge -- that people only respond to $5 price breaks -- will be disproved by these tests.

Finally, on another side note: I love the kiddie twist on a classic DRTV line in this commercial. The secret is ... "snowflake science." How clever!

Let cubes in freezer for 6 hours and did some minutemaid watermelon juice for my self(Im 37) it took a little while to freeze up but it worked for me you will just have to keep making more as cubes do take up a lot of room so you dont get a lot. It is no slurpee but for 24 bucks for 2 of them with free shipping im happy we are going to try chocolate milk and hawaiian punch tommorow.

    1. Here is what you will need-

Juice, soda, or whatever you want to make into a slushie

      ice

      rock salt

      gallon Ziploc baggies

      sandwich Ziploc baggies

Take your juice and pour some into a sandwich baggie. ( I double bagged mine)

Now take a gallon size Ziploc baggie and pour ice cubes about 1/4 way. Pour in 1/3 cup of rock salt on top of the ice cubes. Next, place you fruit bag into the ice bag, seal shut and roll bag around for about 5 minutes or until your juice is a slushie.

      Delete
    2. wont that taste extreamly salty?

      Delete
    3. No, because the small bag that contains the drink stays closed. The salt-ice mix is staying freezing cold, and it freezes the drink. We used to have a (toy) ice cream maker that used rock salt. We'd scrape the cream from around the sides to make "ice cream". This is basically the same concept. (Bravo on your invention!)

      Delete
    4. My nieces and nephews did that with two different sized buckets and an icecream recipe.i bet buckets would make lots more slushie.(mabye a cottage cheese or butter container with a two gallon bucket)and yes i have used that icecream maker, it took FOREVER and the kids were disapointed.thats why they converted to an easier and more fun way.rolling buckets around in the drive.what a hoot.

  10. wow! a lot of 'post removed by a blog administrator' thats all i need to know! and if it really is just water and salt in the cubes then people can make their own in plastic bags for like 10cents

    ReplyDelete
  11. I like the comment of making your own. If you have vacuum sealer, you can make little cubes. You have a 'seal only' on all sealers. Great idea!! Try it yourself!

    ReplyDelete
  12. has anybody acually tried this product though

    ReplyDelete
  13. whats it made out of?

    ReplyDelete
  14. if your gullible enough to believe you can make a slushie, without ice, maybe you should turn off your cable.

    ReplyDelete
  15. This doesnt work, it's overpriced, and and you can probably save more time and money using ice and a machine! :( I was highly unsatisfied with this product.

    ReplyDelete
  16. What in the world!! $8 for shipping. My daughter wanted this for her birthday and I thought I would make an exception until I realize I would have to pay the shipping and handling plus a .25 cent fee I kindy placed my mouse on the top right of my screen and closed the window. You would think the shipping would be free considering we are being over charged.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I read all of the comments but my mom was with me and she heard it doesn't work. Will I get it for my birth day of christmas?

  18. I have ordered this online for my daughter about 2 weeks before her birthday...And about 10 days after her birthday i get an email about having some problems with my order! So i call the phone number they wrote in their email and i get to listen to automessage telling me i need to go to website...So if you have not bought it yet, either make sure it will be done before the special day of your kid or dont friggin buy.Liars...

  19. Look for it at fairs jnside exhibit halls...prices are good and they work really well. My kids love it

  20. I have the cubes in my freezer right now, and we are going to try it tonight!
I bought it for my 7 year old for her bday, but it is really for me!! I had something similar when I was little.
Yes, it seems overpriced, but I think it's worth it just for the fun factor.
I ended up getting 4 cups for $40 including shipping. They had a buy one get one for $19, then two more for $10, then $10 shipping.
I did get an email saying that it was out of stock for 4-6 weeks, but it came in about 10 days.
Directed at whomever asked about the slushy being watered down, they are plastic cube pouches so nothing is diluted.
I did try to make these a few years ago with baggies, but our hands got way too cold and it wasn't fun.
    WARNING -
After you place your order, the site keeps trying to trick you into buying more things with it. Hold your ground, read carefully, and don't get suckered.
Also, the next day a company hired by Slushy Magic called and offered us "free gas cards" as a thank you, and you have to cancel your membership, somethiing something... I stopped listening, asked if she as crazy, and said no.
Very annoying, but hopefully worth it - we shall soon see!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was going to buy this for my kids...now I wont, thank you!!! When it asks about signing up for gas cards and all that stuff...stay away from it, I got sucked into that with the FUSHIGI and cost me A LOT of $$$$

  22. Word of advice to anyone thinking about buying this product. Just wait a month or two and then it will be at your local Wal-Mart. It always happens to me. I'll order something online thinking I'd be the only one with it, and within 2 months everyone that I know owns one. So save yourself the P&H fee, and just buy it at the store.

  28. I had the same disappointing experience as others have had with a delay in receiving the product. They waited a week and a half after I ordered to e-mail me that the product was backordered. The e-mail was so unofficial looking that it could have easily been mistaken for spam. I clicked on the link to check on the backorder status and was given no additional information about when the order would be fulfilled, only that it was being processed. I called customer service and got an automated msg that referred me to their website so back to square one. At least there's a way of canceling your order from that page which is what I'm going to do!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thanks for all the comments,
I wont be ordering this, the shipping is crazy. I will just wait till it goes to CVS!!!

  30. It's a ripp-off. Yes it works as advertised: BUT when you fill the supplied 12 oz cup with the three 'magic cubes' [salt water, which freezes @ colder temp,'] HOW MUCH ROOM IS LEFT FOR YOUR BEVERAGE? The dude @ the State Fair was obviously misleading, because he continually, thru his demo, kept saying, you get 10 oz to the line.'' I asked him about taking the magic cubes out and scraping off the slush, he'd only do one- BUSTED! So you get maybe 2-3 oz of slushy for your trouble. Scam! He got rather perturbed with me for trying to wreck his spiel, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  31. bought it for my dauughter's birthday in JULY and got it at the end of August. We tried it last night, and it gave us maybe 3 ozs of drink and half of that was not even frozen. Do not buy this product. I am returning mine.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It doesnt work, soda leaked due to it's carbonation. Made the lid leak.
It does not get drinks cold enough to make a real slushy. It's a poor attempt.
Don't get your kids hope up. They will be disappointed.

  37. It works OK, but be aware that the little frozen bags take up most of the room in the plastic cup. You pour in barely more than a cup of liquid, up to the marked line on the cup, seal the lid and shake. My son tried with diet root beer and also with apple cider. By the time you fish out the plastic bags, with some of the slushy stuck to them, you end up with VERY LITTLE actual slushy. Quite expensive and very SLOW shipping.

  38. The day after I ordered, a company called QRI called me three times (I missed their first two calls). When I talked to them, they said my order was placed on back-order 4-6 weeks, asked if I wanted to buy anything else, and wanted to know if they could "put me down" for something else from their company.
I actually received it about 10 days after ordering.
I've only tested it twice, but the chocolate milk seemed to freeze, though it's not quite a slushy.

  39. I just picked up a 4 pack of these at the mall in a kiosk for $40 total. It came with 12 cubes, 4 shaker cups and 4 straws. No postage, no waiting and no risk of my card being overcharged.

    1. Save money on your Ipod by getting one at your local Pawn Shop. You should be able to get a 30-day guarantee to make sure it works. Also you'll get a better product for the money. The Ipod my daughter wanted was over $100 at Wal-mart. For her birthday, she asked for money from *everybody*. She went to the Pawn Shop, and for $75 she found one with a video camera and a speaker! And it works like brand new. It had some wear on the side, so her dad used matching nail polish to cover it up. Now it looks like brand new, too!

  43. Although this product did work as they claimed it would , i was a little disapointed with the outcome. The ice cubes took up too much room in the cup and the texture of the actual slushy was not as smooth as you would expect. But my kids loved it anyways! *hint* It works way better if your drink is already chilled before you added to the cup.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh wow...I love it and my kids love it! The price, with shipping is a rip-off but to see the excitement in my kids eyes is well worth it!!

  45. Anything but magic or slushy. Did not work for us and 30-day guarantee expired while product sat under the Christmas tree.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I got it at the as seen on TV store, I think bed bath and beyond carries it as well, so you can use a 20% off coupon. My daughter wanted one for Christmas - it works just fine. She loves it! Now my younger son wants one, so we will pick one up for him for his Bday.

    ReplyDelete
  47. People on here are saying that is doesn't work, but it DOES! My children received as a gift for Christmas. The key to it working is to keep the "magic" cubes in the freezer until they are actually frozen solid (not 2-3 hours like the instructions tell you). Also, have your liquid mixture already chilled...then when you pour it in and shake it will work...and fast! :-) I was pleasantly surprised...I didn't expect it to work.

  48. Hello, Everyone your answer is here, I have made my own by going to the 99Cent store and purchasing these cups which are larger then the slushy magic cups, also have 2 snap openings for straw and 1 straw comes with it, then I proceeded to take my mother's old euro sealer and make my own "cubes" I call them Marty's Magic Slushy Pouches LOL. cuz they are in the shape of pouches not cubes which is actually better for more surface area to freeze. and I can make as many as I want for literally pennies. so I bought 6 huge cups for 99cents a piece plus made 4 Marty's Magic Slushy Pouches for each cup. and it works better then the $40 2 slushy magics my sister bought for my niece. plus they only have 6 cubes. and 3 cubes only work to make 1 slushy then you have to freeze them again, lol. so when they want to make a bunch of slushies for them and kids, then come a knockin for Marty's Magic Slushy Pouches. it's hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yeah well it's like this...
    1st try - 3 pouches, $10, 3 hrs. freezing time.
Lukewarm country tyme lemonade made by my daughter from powder. shake on and off for THREE minutes, I think. results: almost a slushy consistency. Pleasant to 'eat' ! She likes it. A deal?....well no. I agree, now I know to make the pouches myself. I'll just make more, have a freezer full and if it's not freezing fast enough, swap out the little saltwater baggies for fresh ones.

Best part of this honestly is - 1 you make it, that's fun, these are kids so they like that. 2. it DOES NOT water down the drink. Love that.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Does work and now available at Toys R Us $16.99 but the three ice cubes take up the whole space. Fish them out and there is hardly any slushy drink really to enjoy!!! Debating on returning it!!! Also own the Slushy Express machine which for a little more in cost is a slushy appliance that you buy flavors for!! That is a much better product.

  54. My kids received this product from an out of town family member. They love it and use it at least 3 times a week. It works great for them. They have mostly used soda pop, Coke and Pepsi, out of the fridge. They've also made some for me. It doesn't make a large quantity, but they don't seem to mind, plus, less sugar for them, too. Haha. I thought the product worked very well and was easy to use, even for my 8 and 10 year old. I didn't know how much it cost but it's been well worth the expense, as far as my kids are concerned. One of the cubes did start to leak just tonight so we will see if we can get a free replacement since the product was given as a Christmas gift, and therefore, isn't very old. If you do buy one....ENJOY!

  55. I have not yet bought this product – but that doesn't mean it is good, or it is bad. Once, I did a science fair product on freezing ice with different materials, and salt was one of them. I discovered that sugar froze the hardest, so do not try putting too much of that in your own "Slushie Magic" kit, or the one you made at home. But the salt never fully froze – in fact, it turned into perfect slush. Snowflake science indeed – all you need is juice, salt, and ice....but then again there's that salty taste...we're on a roll anyways, okay?

  60. It works. You can buy the set at Kmart and other stores that have a DRTV aisle, I would imagine. You freeze the three soft cubes for 3-4 hours, throw them in the cup with juice/milk and shake. In 2 minutes the solution is slushy.

    ReplyDelete
  61. DOES NOT WORK!!!! bought this for my son a few days ago, tryed soda, gaterade, and juice nothing even came close to being a slushy! just cold drink is all you get. I call the customer service # and told them that it didn't work and their response was oh well return it to the place i bought it...they didn't appologize or anything. just a big scam!

    ReplyDelete
  62. This product is a piece of s#*! We got it for our daughter for her birthday and we were all very disappointed. Not only does it take forever to freeze the cubes but you exhaust yourself shaking the damn thing for about 5 minutes to get some sort of slush and if you shake too much then it just re liquifies again because the cubes melt in no time. They are only good for 1 slushy and it barely makes any at all. On the plus side you'll have awesome looking biceps by the time summer is over. My rating: dxont waste your money, go to target and get a snow cone machine, it makes more and its easier... and you can still make it any flavor you want. PLUS you dont have to wait hours upon hours for the cubes to re freeze again

  63. Saw this at the Sportman's show at the Fargo Dome in Fargo, ND last month. Saw the demo & he had me try it out for myself. It did work, slushy got very thick. I did not purchase at the show but wished I did! I am hoping that they are at the Home & Garden Show so I can pick up a few sets. When I made mine, he only put 1 cube in and it worked fine. I also believe that you will get much better results if the liquid you are using is very well chilled! Yes, the cubes take up room in the glass..but I figured that once it is slushed, I could pour it into another glass, then add more :)
I want these for sumetime adult beverages. He did tell me that you need to slush the other ingredients first then once slushed thick, add the liquor.

  64. we bought this in hopes that it would actually be slushy. it does in fact get some slush to it, but nowhere near like the commercial. My 4 and 6 year old love it regardless. even though it doesn't do what it says it would do, I still actually like it. my drinks become ice cold with some ice particles. but honestly I can do the exact same thing by putting any drink of my choice and how ever much I want into the freezer for 30 minutes at a time, stirring it everytime I check it until it becomes as a slushy as I want it. This way works better!!! Soda won't go near as flat, and no vigorous shaking! And also, the snow ball machines, still a waste if you are wanting a slushy drink that won't become watered down. my way seriously works best!!!! the "snowflake science" and the huge reusable squishy ice cubes and the overall "magic", is what is getting our kids. if I could do it over again, I would not buy this product. it will be given away. I wouldn't even sell it at my yard sale. I don't want someone else getting ripped off.......

  71. Slushy Magic cup is CRAP. It only works after rigorously shaking until your arm is about to fall off. Kids didn't like shaking the cup, since it took too long, despite the 3 included bags of SALT+WATER mixture being completely frozen solid.

Also, it only works ONCE and won't make another until completely (not partially) frozen again.

    Frustrating, misleading and overrated.

  78. We got a slushie magic at Target the first two times we used it all I got was a really cold dink. I went to Targets website and a lady posted that you had to freeze the ice cubes overnight, I tried that and the next morning it worked I had to shake it more then the two minutes but it got pretty thick, the kids where excited but since we only have one slushie magic we wont be able to make another one till tonight, which sucks. The lid did leak around the edge of the cup which is another downside, we may buy another one because we have three kids and it doesn't make enough to share, I may try the baggie idea with the rock salt and water, much cheaper then the slushie magic.

  80. This product works really well! I dont know what everyone is complaining about! If it leaks put your finger over the hole in the cap, like the directions said. I LOVE SLUSHY MAGIC<3

  81. Doesn't work! Wish I'd read the reviews before purchasing! I had the ice cubes in the freezer for a couple of days before I actually tried this. I used mango juice that was cold from being in the fridge for a couple of days. Filled the cup to the line, put in the cubes, held my finger over the hole on the cover and shook and shook for several minutes. It got colder, but that was all. I shook that thing until the cubes were half thawed out and it still didn't slush up the juice. Waste of money.

  84. Son got one as an early Christmas gift (had to have some teeth pulled today = slushy would be something good for him to drink). Ours works just fine. Those who are complaining must be doing something wrong. It's really not that hard.

  85. My cousin got this as a Christmas gift. We froze ice cubes overnight and filled cup to the line. Still leaks and does not make slushies. We have another and are wondering if we can return both even though one has been opened?

  86. The slushy magic works very well... shake it for two or so minutes while covering the hole in the lid and it works very well!So far ive made a cherry cool aid slushy and a lemonade/berry slushy! both were very good

  87. The only time ours worked was when we had the refrigerator temperature on an 8/8 setting - practically frozen! Any lower and the liquid used is too warm and just ends up cold after shaking.

Shaking also produced flying liquid all over the place, even with a finger over the hole! It seems like the threads on the lid don't allow the product to be sealed tight enough. This has caused a cold, sticky nightmare, all over the counter, the walls, and our clothing!
We had to take a rag and wrap it around the lid to prevent the leaking liquid to fly all over.

Finally, when the product is ready, there's hardly anything to enjoy because the ice cubes take up 75% of the container!

Overall more trouble than it's worth...

  88. What a rip off! I bought this for both of my girls to try yesterday! We followed the instructions just like it said and it doesn't work! Just sort of cold drinks!!!. Nothing like what they advertise on TV or on the box....What a scam.....I'm tired of buying products that just don't stand up to what they say! You would think I would learn by now. Not happy at all.... :(

  89. They should NOT sell a leaking product! BUT if you haven't returned your slushy magic kit yet, try just doing the same steps only in a different container or cup with a lid. Should still work! Hope this helps! :)
